The first time I bowhunted Alaska, an outfitter wasn’t required and several of us flew into Anchorage, hired a flying service, and went goat hunting. The Alaska Fish and Game commission changed that law just in time to foul up my second goat bowhunt, scheduled with an Alaskan resident who had access to great goat country.

All goat licenses in the lower 48 are on a limited license lottery basis, so start planning your goat hunt now, because it might take a few years to get a license.

The key essentials to a good sheep or goat hunting venture are physical conditioning, proper clothing and footgear for the best and worst weather conditions in your chosen hunting area, and the best optics you can afford. Of course, it goes without saying that such things as prior planning, enthusiasm, perseverance, a modicum of hunting ability, and skill with your archery equipment will also help. Last but not least, a large passel of luck won’t hurt either.
