Much-bemoaned popular MTV reality series. Within weeks of its 2009 premiere, the show wasn’t just the punch line of late-night hosts’ monologues—its cast members were guests on the couches. Seemingly overnight, they became pop culture icons, and their nicknames (Snooki, the Situation, JWOWW, etc.) and slang (smash, GTL, guidette, etc.) became part of the American lexicon. And, because everybody watched it (the show earned network-like ratings), everybody had something to say about it, from New Jersey governor Chris Christie (he was not a fan, insisting that it perpetuated misconceptions about the state) to Barbara Walters, who featured the cast on her Most Fascinating People list in 2010. Controversy around the show was not hard to come by: some took offense at the cast’s liberal—and favorable—use of the word guido, which UNICO denounced as an ethnic slur. Later, it was the show’s depiction of misogyny and its dual subversion of and conformation to stereotypical gender roles. (The men wax their eyebrows and cook dinner, while the women drink heavily and fistfight.) As for sexual behavior, critics all seemed to be in agreement that it was normal for guys to sleep around but disgusting for women to do the same.
