Another bark and twig feeder, often settling itself high in the tree for days on end, is the porcupine. Foliage sprays and twig tips littering the snow beneath a tree are sure signs of a feeding porcupine, as are irregular patches gnawed down to the wood on upper trunks or branches. The chewed twig ends show diagonal cuts.

Lore: Native Americans found a variety of uses for this tree. They steeped young needles in water for a tea rich in vitamin C (obviously not the suicidal potion that Socrates drank—that tea came from the unrelated poison hemlock, Conium maculatum, an herb in the parsley family). The dried and ground inner bark provided a nourishing flour and thickener and was also applied to wounds and abrasions to stop bleeding. As a mouthwash it eased sore gums, and bark tea was a remedy for diarrhea.
