Chapter 30

WATCHING FROM HIS lonely wooden tower, Raymond could make out that something had happened and could discern three figures moving slowly back towards the Manor. His heart sang for her. The two men she had frequently mentioned in her dreams, if these were they then it was indeed miraculous. He scurried back down as fast as he could and immediately began striking the alarm bell hanging close to the courtyard gates.

In no time, everybody in the Manor assembled in the courtyard.

Giles moved quickly forward. “What is it, Raymond? Why have you called us?”

All eyes were on Raymond. “Be ready for visitors. Lady Aveline will be here very soon and not like you have seen her for many moons. She has two riders with her, and I think we are about to treat them as most welcome and honoured guests. There is much this story can tell us, but only she can say. Will someone now please open the gates?”

Athlestan strode forward before anybody else. Anything concerning Aveline he would always be in the forefront. He had come a long way since his blacksmith days. “Stand away everybody, it is my duty.”

He swiftly cranked open the creaking double gates. Nobody moved as they stared out into the land beyond. In no time at all, firstly came the sound and then the sight of three riders as they began entering the Manor.

Aveline dressed once again as a Crusader, her head held high but smiling, led the way followed by two other riders, clearly Knights Templar and one holding upright their battle flag.

She had a natural grace and dignity that now shone from her, and that not one could deny. Athlestan was first to her. “My lady, how may I help you?”

“Athlestan I can see to myself but assist my guests and we will then go to the hall.”

Later all introductions had been made and food and drink flowed plentifully. Aveline very much needed to talk with Simon alone. First however, he told of his travels and was on a quest although he would not truly say what.

The hall went quiet when Aveline stood up to address them all. Turning her gaze left and right she surveyed all with a smile and asked to be excused from the table as she needed to speak privately with Chevalier Simon de Cardona on a private matter. Raymond gave a knowing smile and only he knew what she would be talking about.
