CHAPTER 11

Chad

There was a special place in hell for idiots like me. I kissed her. Not that I didn’t want to kiss her. Almost all the time. But I shouldn’t have. Not after I’d just had to beg her to let me help her get a new car. A car I would have paid for myself without any kind of strings or taking so much as a dollar from her. Now it looked like I expected something from her in return.

And apparently, she agreed, because she disappeared right after and didn’t return. Two and half hours passed, and because karma wasn’t my best friend, or even an entity that could ever take pity on me, her boyfriend showed up. I had to serve him my beers and pretend that I hadn’t just tried to kiss the face off the woman he loved. I might not have known much, but I knew he loved her. Maybe not the deep lasting kind—probably too soon for that—but definitely something of the hearts and flowers and stars in his eyes variety. I’d played enough romantic heroes to recognize the look.

We sat in uneasy silence in the sitting room, beers on coasters, each of us looking everywhere but at each other. Two guys vying for the same girl—not that I was vying for anything—didn’t sit in a room looking at each other. Apparently, they didn’t chat either. And it was killing me. “So, you’ve known Joss for a while?” Not as long as I had.

“Yeah.” And that was it.

I nodded. “She’s pretty great. Great cook. Great smile.” Maybe I could’ve said great one more time. “Yeah, she’s great.”

Again... “Yeah.” He turned to face me. “How long are you staying in town?”

For all its bluntness, it wasn’t a question I’d given much consideration. At some point, I’d go back. But there wasn’t a hurry that I knew of. And then, my phone rang. I pulled it out and frowned. My agent never called me. Almost never. Sometimes. But I answered anyway. “Hey Cheryl.” She’d been with me since the beginning and we’d made each other a fortune, drank some beer together, even been lovers for a while, though thankfully, we were back to all business.

“Tell me how much you love me.” I’d heard this tone before. Another role. Another offer. Another six months or so of work.

“You know I do.”

“And you’re going to love me long time. I know you’re tired of those romcom roles, but this one is huge. Sara Stone huge.” The newest big thing in Hollywood starlets. “And they came to me to ask for you.” Papers shuffled on her desk. “Here it is. Shooting schedule is soft. Easy. But you have to be here tomorrow to sign. They want you locked in. How soon can you get on a plane?”

Back to Hollywood? Back to night shoots—romcoms always required at least one—and security, photographers following my every move, no time to do more than learn my lines and take direction. Leaving Joss with Hayden.
