Navigating the Maze of Groups

When people are in motion politically, a lot of different organizational forms and combinations spring up—networks, collectives, sub-groups, front groups, sects, splits, alliances, and more. This can be confusing, but it’s simply the nature of how movements develop.

Here are the main groups I talk about in this book, and how they relate to each other:

Occupy Wall Street

Adbusters, a magazine in Canada, sent out a call in July 2011 for people to descend on Wall Street in New York City on September 17 and camp out. Initially smaller than expected, the occupation took hold and expanded into hundreds of locations, and has become the most significant domestic political event of this generation so far.

Stop the Machine

Promoted in June 2011 (before the call for Occupy Wall Street was issued) by prominent activists, and begun on October 6 (after the start of OWS), this was both a loose network and an action (an ongoing protest encampment) at Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC. Though similar to the “Occupy” protests, it wasn’t identical. Occupy DC and Stop the Machine coordinated actions together, but remained separate.

One Struggle

An anti-capitalist/anti-imperialist collective in South Florida (with other possible chapters forming). This is the organization I mainly identify with—my participation with other events and groupings is usually as a One Struggle member. Its “Points of Unity” document is included as an Appendix.

Anti-Capitalist Caucus

A diverse and loose network of both organized and independent anti-capitalists in South Florida, many of whom also work with One Struggle, Occupy Fort Lauderdale, and/or Occupy Miami.
