To utilize this scale, begin by sharing the specific learning goals at the beginning of a new unit. Ask students to record their scores at that point. Reassure them that it’s perfectly fine to have a low score and that the goal is to learn together and move up the scale. Then, periodically throughout the unit, you can ask students to revisit their original scores and mark their new scores as their learning progresses. You can do this formally, in students’ own academic notebooks, or informally, by having them show you their scores with their fingers or on a note at the end of the day. Then, throughout or at the unit’s end, you can celebrate students whose scores increased. Highlight the hard work it took them to improve. You can do this with individual students or with the class as a whole.

Celebrate students in a variety of ways, including public or one-to-one acknowledgment, phone calls, or letters home. You can look your student in the eye, shake his or her hand, and say how proud you are and why. It’s important to know what type of recognition each student will most likely appreciate. For example, to celebrate me, you can throw a big party and put my name on a giant billboard; I’ll love it! To celebrate my husband, on the other hand, it’s best to keep it low key and personal. You have students like us and those in between. If you’re not sure of the best way to acknowledge a student, simply ask. Start with a one-to-one conversation during which you praise his or her growth, discuss what the student did to achieve that growth, and then suggest that you’d like to celebrate the student another way. Ask if any of the following options sound good to him or her: a phone call home, recognition in front of the class, or something else.
