In devaluing the Lennon/McCartney partnership, Lennon’s 1971 interview ultimately reinforced both the Lennon Remembers and the Shout! narratives. By contradicting Lennon’s accounts and promoting his own version of the Beatles’ story, it was McCartney’s interview with Playboy that appeared to be encouraging revisionism: Norman later accused McCartney of rewriting history.91 With Lennon gone, McCartney theoretically could make any number of claims which Lennon was no longer around to dispute.
