Who I Am

“Are you saying… I have to die?” Clarisse stared at him with a relaxed jaw.

“Mmm, yeah,” he bobbed his head around as if he were a dash ornament, “I mean, it appears obvious. Do you have any idea who we can talk to, on this side of the cosmos?” Standing swiftly, he noted she took a step back from him, “What’s the matter?”

Breathing in a deep, slow pant, she stammered, “You’re not going to hurt me, are you?”

His brown orbs wide, he glared at her for a long moment, “How could you even think that I would? You’re the love of my life, Donna!” he cringed as soon as he said the name, “Or Clarisse, or whatever the hell you wanna call yourself. You,” he pointed at her, raking his hand up and down in front of her form, “In there. You, are the half that makes me whole,” and the color drained from his face as soon as he said it, “Shit!”

“What?” she clipped.

Tugging at his bangs, he pulled them back and held them out of his face, unsure if she should know. Deciding not to hide the truth, he confessed, “I bought you a ring… with a diamond on it. I was going to give it to you, on vacation this summer.”

“Oh my God, are you serious?” she shouted, unable to hide the smile, throwing herself into his arms. “Holy shit, Charlie! You wanna marry me?”

I have to admit, in light of the last twenty-four hours, I’ll be shocked as hell if I get to.”

Leaning back so she could see his face, she continued to grin, “Wow, that’s pretty blunt there, Charlie Phillips. I suddenly feel like a vampire, with a human lover who wants to put a stake through my heart.”

Her blue eyes dancing, he felt drawn in by her twisted sense of humor. “I do love you,” he ran his hand up and down her spine, “So let’s see if we can work this out without the stake, ok?” He grinned a little wider, “An’ you need to pick; which name are you gonna use?”

Crinkling her nose while she showed him her full set of teeth, she replied, “Clarisse. That’s who I am. And if I have to avoid Donna’s family until we get this sorted out, all the better.”

“Oh, Christ!” he exclaimed, “Donna’s family! That’s who we need t’ go see!”

“Who?” her brow furrowed, “Please don’t tell me you want to go see Madeline!”

“Oh, hell no,” he spun around, gathering the plates and pan off the table, then carrying them to the sink. “You said Grandma Parker could tell you weren’t Donna.”

“And?”

“And, we need to pay her a visit, but now, when no one else is around. See what she says. Maybe she’s
