The first prototype of Google's wearable computing technology Google Glass did not make it look very useful. The huge glasses obscured the wearer's face, and numerous wires led to a backpack filled with the heavy batteries required to power the device. Even once the sleek, elegantly designed commercial version was introduced to developers, the product did not strike most people as something they would be able to put to good use. It seemed like a novelty.

Now, however, truly useful, even lifesaving examples of where the Google Glass technology will likely be employed abound. With its hands-free operation, its ability to project information in the user's field of view, and its capacity to let someone else see what the user is seeing, the wearable computer will probably be indispensable in many occupations before long.

Firefighters will be able to view blueprints of a building so that they can navigate more quickly to the source of a fire or to spots where people could be trapped. Aircraft engine maintenance technicians will be able to refer to manuals without having to set down their tools. Physicians will be able to refer to patient records, X-rays, and images while performing surgery, and specialists will be able to coach doctors in rural locations through unfamiliar procedures. Chefs and home cooks alike will be able to read recipes while handling cookware and while measuring and mixing ingredients.

Think of any situation in which your hands are busy, dirty, sterile, full of tools, or otherwise occupied—or any situation in which it would be helpful to have others able to see from your viewpoint—and you can think of an application for Google Glass.

Google's definition of innovation is something that's new, surprising, and radically useful. The company's philosophy is that if it can dream up innovations that are ten times bigger than what exists in the market, it will not only capture more customer demand but also be able to attract more creative talent. Breakthrough ideas such as those that Google constantly seeks are essential fuel for an organization's agility, and the ability to generate them can determine which companies thrive and which ones don't.

So, how can you develop truly breakthrough innovations? In this chapter, I explore this question in detail, providing a proven framework for action.
