Techniques of Intervention with Unwilling Youth

Not surprisingly, unwilling youth are often not very verbal in their first therapy sessions. Therapists are likely to encounter angry, silent youth. Silence or denial, especially in the initial interviews, acts as a source of power on the part of the youth, who are, in actuality, frightened, maladaptively functioning persons who acutely perceive a loss of control in their lives. To terminate these youth from therapy quickly is a reactive response to recalcitrance and may prematurely end a process that might be, if the clinicians are both patient and creative enough, successfully resolved.
