Final Thoughts

Feedback is inseparably connected to quality instruction. The efficacy of the feedback is dependent on the efficacy of the instruction in any classroom. Feedback, according to Hattie and Temperley (2007), “can only build on something; it is of little use when there is no initial learning or surface information” (p. 104). The two go hand in hand. Instruction without feedback makes for lackluster performance on the part of students who have no earthly idea where they are in the continuous improvement journey. The foundation of a good rubric or any good feedback tool is good instruction. When a student knows he will receive feedback that is corrective, descriptive, and ultimately useful, he just may become more interested in the outcome.

In Chapter 6, we’ll expand our discussion of feedback with a look at the whole issue of formative versus summative assessment. Specifically, we’ll look at which of those two forms of assessment is more cost-effective in terms of student achievement and student success.
