Six

No longer tired, and feeling invigorated by her thoughts, Naomi took her laptop from her bedside table and began scrolling through images of all the cafés she could find in and around the county of Kent and a little farther afield.

The only money she had was her redundancy pay, and although that wasn’t much, if she could find a job fairly fast, she could put that money into a savings account.

Her parents would help in any way they could, so, if this was really possible, she could ask them to lend her the money they were going to give her anyway for a replacement car. She wouldn’t need a car if she could pull this off.

But could she actually do it?

And more importantly, would she get the opportunity?

Questions and ideas whirled around in her mind like a cake mix batter. Would this rise and make her proud? Or would it fall flat and make more of a mess than she was in right now?

She could ask the universe for help.

But the last time she had done that, it had sent her a mugger.

She wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice.

‘Are you awake, darling?’ Her mum’s voice penetrated her thoughts.

‘Yes. Do you need me?’

‘Only if you’d like something for tea.’

‘For tea?’ Naomi glanced at her watch. How could it be six p.m. already? ‘I’ll be right down.’

She wasn’t hungry, but she could murder a cup of tea. Plus, her parents would have gone out earlier for their afternoon walk. They may have met someone who might have an update.

She closed her laptop and slid it under her arm before hurrying downstairs to the kitchen.

‘Did you have a good nap?’ James asked, sitting in the same seat he had occupied at breakfast.

Lunch was eaten in the dining room, but breakfast, tea and supper were always eaten in the kitchen. Unless the Harts were entertaining guests, in which case every meal was eaten in the dining room.

‘I found I couldn’t drift off. I did some reading instead. Have you been out for a walk?’

Naomi sat on the chair Fiona had occupied that morning, and even such a small thing as sitting on a different chair, made her smile. New and exciting adventures beckoned, and in order to do something new, she had to do something different.

‘We have. It’s going to be another cold night, I think, but not as windy as last night.’

‘Did you speak to anyone from the village?’

James gave her a curious look as Margaret placed a large cup of tea in front of him, and one in front of Naomi.

‘No. Why? There’s a strange look on your face, sweetheart. Anything you want to share?’

Naomi smiled. ‘No. Not yet. Just a few things whirling around in my mind.’ She lifted the cup to her lips but let it hover there, holding it with both hands. ‘So no news about what’s happened with Doris and Derek?’

Margaret shook her head. ‘No. But we did stroll up to the café and there’s now a sign on the glass door saying, “Closed until further notice due to unforeseen circumstances.
