Needing

comfort John 20:11-16ff

11But Mary stood weeping

outside the tomb. As she wept,

she bent over to look into the tomb;

12and she saw two angels in white.

13They said to her,

‘Woman, why are you weeping?’

She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord,

and I do not know where they have laid him.’

14When she had said this,

she turned around

and saw Jesus standing there,

16Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’

She turned and said to him in Hebrew,

‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher).

Is there life

after death? Romans 10:8-9ff

8But what does it say?

‘The word is near you,

on your lips and in your heart’

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);

9because if you confess with your lips

that Jesus is Lord

and believe in your heart

that God raised him from the dead,

you will be saved.

Bereavement John 11:32, 38-40, 43ff

32When Mary came where Jesus was

and saw him, she knelt at his feet

and said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here,

my brother would not have died.’

38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed,

came to the tomb.

It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.

39Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’

Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him,

‘Lord, already there is a stench

because he has been dead four days.’

40Jesus said to her,

‘Did I not tell you that if you believed,

you would see the glory of God?’

43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice,

‘Lazarus, come out!’

Hearing the

promise of

eternal life Luke 23:39-40a, 42-43ff

39One of the criminals

who were hanged there

kept deriding him and saying,

‘Are you not the Messiah?

Save yourself and us!’

40But the other rebuked him,

saying, ’Do you not fear God,

since you are under the same sentence

of condemnation?’

42Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me

when you come into your kingdom.’

43He replied, ‘Truly I tell you,

today you will be with me in Paradise.’

Learning to

look and

listen

differently Matthew 28:5-7ff

5But the angel said to the women,

‘Do not be afraid;

I know that you are looking for Jesus

who was crucified.

6He is not here;

for he has been raised, as he said.

Come, see the place where he lay.

7Then go quickly and tell his disciples,

“He has been raised from the dead,

and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee;

there you will see him.” This is my message for you.’

Fears

around

death Revelation 22:1-6

1Then the angel showed me

the river of the water of life,

bright as crystal,

flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb

2through the middle of the street of the city.

On either side of the river is the tree of life

with its twelve kinds of fruit,

producing its fruit each month;

and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

3Nothing accursed will be found there any more.

But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it,

and his servants will worship him;

4they will see his face,

and his name will be on their foreheads.

5And there will be no more night;

they need no light of lamp or sun,

for the Lord God will be their light,

and they will reign forever and ever.

6And he said to me,

‘These words are trustworthy and true,

for the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets,

has sent his angel to show his servants

what must soon take place.
