When the church conducts its liturgy, when the church reads the Bible, when the church declares the gospel, it engages in a counteract, counteracting the world so long dominant among us.
The most important resistance to this evangelical counterimagination does not come from militant secularists. It comes from well-intentioned believers who are infected with modernity. It comes from the pastor's own sinking sense that none of this is true. So we worship and proclaim:
• a memory in a community that aggressively forgets,
• a covenant in a community deeply enmeshed in commodity, and
• a hope in a community that believes very little is promised or possible.
