JEROME MURPHY-O’CONNOR

Prisca . . . was the most important early Christian who is not a household name.

MICHAEL PEPPARD

While you may not have been familiar with the names Damaris, Syntyche, or Tryphaena before reading this book, perhaps you have heard of Prisc(ill)a and her husband, Aquila. They are “persons of interest” in Paul’s lengthy list of greetings in Romans 16 (16:3), but their names also appear elsewhere in Paul’s letters (1 Cor 16:19; 2 Tim 4:19) and in Luke’s account of the apostolic spread of the gospel in his book of Acts (18:1-4, 18-27). They were highly active, not only in their shared labor as craftworkers, but also in ministry throughout the empire. ¹ And not just anywhere in the empire, but in major cities like Corinth, Ephesus, and Rome. Paul knew them well and commended them for their shared ministry work, including bailing out Paul on at least one occasion. To this couple all the Gentile churches owe a special debt of gratitude.
