Small-Group and One-on-One Learning

Small group is a great time to work with groups of DLL children to enhance their language and literacy development. If one of the teachers speaks the home language of the children, then small group can occur in the home language. Activities can include prereading a book that will be read in English later in the day, building literacy skills in the home language that the children will then be able to transfer once they have sufficient vocabulary in the community language, and preteaching thematic content in the home language. In addition, the community language can be used to build vocabulary skills through direct explicit instruction within the small group.

As time permits, one-on-one learning is also valuable for DLLs in the early childhood classroom. This is particularly helpful in classrooms with superdiverse learners and with DLLs who may need additional help. It is important that teachers know and understand some words in the child’s home language in order to have an effective learning interchange with the DLL learner. One-to-one time can be used to scaffold language during play scenarios, teach math skills, or enhance language skills via computer-based learning. Using developmentally appropriate technology tools that are available in the child’s home language can help the child to continue building on his or her first language skills even if the teacher does not speak the child’s language. This is a great use of one-on-one learning time for the DLL child and will also help the child to feel more comfortable after hearing a new language for most of the day.
