Applying the 80/20 Rule
What Is the 80/20 Rule?
While the 80/20 rule was discovered by an economist at the turn of the twentieth century, the rule in general may be applied to many aspects of teaching in a classroom. There are many applications of this rule in public school. Before getting too far into the application of the rule, here is how Wikipedia explains the principle.
[T]he 80/20 rule … states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Management consultant Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who … showed that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population.1
