Keeping Yourself Young at Heart while Teaching
The great man is he who does not lose his childlike heart.
âMencius
It needs to be remembered that when you take care of yourself in different ways so that you have a healthy, vibrant personal life, you in turn can feel that much healthier physically, emotionally, and mentally. In turn, your positive personal life can truly be helpful for your professional responsibilities and help you to become that much more creative in your ability to relate to your students and in your ability to inspire their appreciation of your subject.
In turn, keeping yourself young at heart is essential for keeping your vitality along with achieving your goals of teaching. Having a positive attitude is very good. With this sense of vitality and having a positive attitude, you yourself can become your own salesperson for your subject matter, along with inspiring the hearts and the minds of the young adults in your classroom.
A logical question will surely arise: How are you supposed to keep yourself young at heart? You probably think that you are not earning the salary you deserve. You have a curriculum that can be very demanding, thus oftentimes requiring you to devote many hours to teacher preparation and paper correction. You can have students who can require a lot of your attention due to their misbehaviors. You can have belligerent parents and guardians who are ready to catch you when you are doing something wrong so that they can create chaos for you. You have meetings to attend. You may have to contend with staff members whose attitudes may be very critical. There may be school violence. In other words, there can be a multitude of negative factors that can drain your childlike heart.
While all of the above scenarios can be daily challenges, the one factor that always needs to be remembered is why you are in the classroom environment in the first place. You enjoy the subject matter. You may enjoy a majority of your students. You enjoy the youthful energy that they have, because within you, underneath the exterior of your responsible, adult body, is a child who enjoys sharing and enjoying different aspects of life, including your subject matter.
When you have a youthful spirit, you enjoy your ability to manage and create inspiration in your students in your classes. You can enjoy making a difference with your students in fun, funny, and enthusiastic ways, sparking creativity within yourself. If you are musically inclined, you may wish to sing a song that your students can relate to your subject matter. If you are not necessarily musically inclined and if there are some students in your classes who are, you may wish to have them create songs that can be helpful for them and for the other students to enjoy as well as to learn from.
When you experience joy on a daily basis with your students, they in turn will feel how happy you are to be sharing with them, thus being possibly and continually motivated by your enthusiasm.
