So how can you selfadvocate? The first thing is to not be embarrassed about your ADHD. Remember, you are in some pretty good company (like Michael Phelps) and millions of kids in the U.S. have the same type of problems that you do.
We can’t reiterate this enough: Having ADHD does not make you stupid. There’s no reason to be embarrassed about your ADHD the way Allyson was—lots of kids get different accommodations in school to help them with everything from needing extra time on tests, to going to the nurse’s office, to use their inhalers so they can breathe better. Don’t be shy about letting your teachers, coaches, boss, or friends know what you are struggling with. Some of them may share their struggles with you too! Here are some specific strategies that you can employ in your life right now.
In School
Inform your teachers of your needs early in the semester. Most will be receptive to your needs if alerted to them before there is a problem.
Don’t hesitate to question teachers if you do not understand something. It is important not to let this go, as the next class is apt to build upon the class before.
Ask for examples, applications, or rephrasing, rather than repetition.
Participate in class discussions. This can bring up your grade if you have a problem with a test or other assignments. Remember, asking questions is part of participation.
If possible, join or create a study group to discuss and review material.
At Home
Ask your parents to give you a written list of chores that you can hang up in your room rather than having them just tell you what they want you to do.
When your parents are giving you instructions, try to maintain eye contact with them.
If you want to work more independently at home, start by telling your parents that you will check in every 20 minutes to show them what you have accomplished. Later, that time period can be extended as you prove you can do it.
Establish your own study periods by using your calendar, timers, and other tools.
With Your Friends
Make a private agreement with your best friend to signal you when you are getting too “hyped up” with your friends.
When you schedule activities with your friends, make sure you check your schedule so you don’t forget to meet them. Set alarms so that you are on time.
When you are going to meet friends at the mall or other place, leave 10 minutes early so you aren’t late.
When angry or upset with a friend, wait at least one hour before you respond to a text or e-mail. This will give you time to calm down and think so you don’t say something you might regret.
