Chapter Fourteen

I'm not sure how long we would have stood there, the weight of their expectations bearing down on me while I tried to make sense of their wants, but Edric didn't appear patient enough to find out. Rather than wait for us to snap out of whatever shock infused stupor we were in, he walks right up to me and takes my face between his large hands.

In this position, I can do nothing but focus on his face, and see how the creases have formed at the corners of his eyes. My senses immediately go on alert and become locked in on his expression, as I realize that only he and Jenee returned.

“Where’s Macio?” My heart speeds as worry begins to gnaw at me. It quickens further when Edric shakes his head.

"G-gone. Couldn't f-f-ind him."

My worry for my lost friend is so strong, that I don't even get the opportunity to be proud of how smoothly Edric had formed his words. Or that each time he speaks, he seems to regain some of the confidence death had robbed him of. I can't even consider if the reason is because of our being here with the other hybrids or if time would have returned it.

Sure, it ran across my mind as Terrance spoke, that their nearness could be an explanation for how both he and Jenee have settled more back into their pre-death selves, but it wasn't the most pressing matter I had to deal with, so I pushed all that away as my thoughts went to Macio.

Resolved in the comfort of having a mission, something I am innately familiar with, I reach up and remove Edric's lukewarm hands from my cheek, and step around him so that I can see Terrance and his group. With a mission, something to focus on, I feel more like myself now than I have in a long time. I don't so much as falter beneath their searching looks.

"My friend is missing. I don't know where he's gone, only that Edric can't find him. I don't need to tell you that Edric is different. Y'all, of all people, should be able to sense that, so you should know that he is quite adept at tracking. If he's not finding him, it's because he's no longer inside the outpost. There's no reason he would willingly leave without the rest of us, so I need to know who took him."

Terrance’s open expression appears to shutter closed at my accusation, and I can see his people visibly draw up. It doesn't matter that I've pissed them off because Macio, despite how distant he's seemed lately, is my best friend. If someone so much as harms a hair on his head, I'll make them pay in ways they couldn't conjure up in their worst nightmares.

As I gaze at them, I make the threat clear on my face and know that of them all, Terrance with his ability to mind speak, gets my warning loud and clear. He holds my glare with a clenched jaw.
