12:25. Anxiety

This word, rather than AV, RV’s heaviness, gives the normal sense of the Heb.; cf. Joshua 22:24. A good word is wider than the good news which would remove the cause of the anxiety but is not always possible; a good word gives courage to face it. Cf. 18:14.

12:26. Walk circumspectly

The translators differ greatly on the first line. AV is possible but unlikely; RSV emends freely; RV (is a guide to his neighbour) takes the most probable verb (to investigate, make reconnaissance: cf. Deut. 1:33; Eccl. 7:25), but inserts a preposition. Delitzsch revocalizes neighbour, to read ‘pasture’. Yet the literal translation is not meaningless: ‘makes investigation of his close friend’ (Heb. mērēa‘ as in 19:7; Judg. 15:2). That is to say, he does not rush into a friendship, and does not surrender his moral judgment to anyone. The need of such reconnaissance is made plain by the second line.
