CHAPTER 12

The Reunion

The night came. They couldn’t go anywhere other than stay at the hospital, because their car had been taken away by the tsunami. Some survivors went down to the ground but the rest wouldn’t go out of fear.

It was a cold night. Autumn had already come to this northern region. The people moved to the sickrooms on the floors that had escaped the attack of the tide. They brought boards up from the lower floors and nailed them to the window-frames to guard against the night wind. Although the boards blocked it, it wasn’t easy to sleep because the floors were now slanted.

It was an ominous night. There was no light, no noise, no sign of creatures outside. What they could hear was just the faint noise of drops dripping from the floors below. But they sometimes heard people whisper and babies cry.

“I feel relief when babies cry,” Mother said in the darkness, “That seems to be the vigorous breath of life.”

“There was obstetrics and gynaecology in this hospital,” Daniel replied.

“You know that well!” Larissa said in a low voice.

“What!” Daniel upset, “I haven’t learned the words.”

“Oh, you are becoming a new person like me.”

“What do you mean?”

“Mm, wait a moment.” Larissa kept quiet for a while.

Mother wondered what she was doing but Daniel felt she was meditating.

Larissa started to tell, “Your chakras are opening more and more each day. When all of your chakras are open, you will be released from the yoke of time and space, and you’ll be able to access any information on the earth.”

Daniel asked hesitatingly, “What is a chakra?”

“It is a centre of energy in the body. It is said we have seven chakras inside the body.”

“Did you know that yourself?”

“Of course not. Just now I was given that information from my higher self.”

“Higher self?”

“My higher self is the origin of me. We all have one. I and my higher self influence each other. If we can ask it, it will send us information.

Then Mother said, “Everyone’s going to sleep now. Have the talk again tomorrow.”

“Oh, OK,” the two replied and covered themselves with their blankets.

Mother wanted them to sleep soon before they began to feel hungry. She already felt it. She knew that the amount of food Larissa took these days had been getting less, but it was strange that Daniel hadn’t been complaining that he was hungry.

The next morning the people worried about water to and food. Some of them went out to see the scene around the hospital, and what they saw was fallen trees, drifted roofs, dirty bodies and a lot of rubbish. They wanted to know the situation in the city but there was no way. Two of the people had portable radios, but they couldn’t pick up a signal. It seemed the broadcasting stations were not working.

Mother felt very hungry but she didn’t say so, because she was afraid her children might awake to their own hunger.

While it was getting up noon, they found some people walking down from the direction of the city centre.
