Chapter Fifty

Helmut Fuhrmann paced the length of the cabin, fury burning through him. The entire situation was turning into a giant cluster fuck. The idiots had captured the wrong girl! Not only was she the wrong girl, she was a connected girl. He’d thought, no problem. He could use her to contact the Vampire’s concubine, but this one was being quite uncooperative. And if her parents were friends of the Mayor, then she would surely be missed, so he couldn’t even kill her to ease some of his frustration. The ramifications of her disappearance would be catastrophic, a distraction to the Mayor that Fuhrmann couldn’t risk. They were at a critical juncture in their plan, and the Mayor’s involvement and complete attention were imperative.

The door opened and two lower Clansmen were escorted into the room. These were the two responsible for this ungodly screw up. Fuhrmann turned to face them, his control wavering as they closed the door behind them. They were typical of his race, tall and reedy with the weightless hair that was a side effect of their use of magic.

Pointing at the slumped form of the red-headed girl, now lying curled on the floor, he said, “Who is this that you have brought to me.”

The two men exchanged a glance, each hoping the other would speak first. Finally, the taller of the two opened his mouth and said, “Sire, it is the girl you asked for. The Sweet girl.”

“And what makes you so sure that she is who you say?” The one who had spoken kicked the other, who yelped. Fuhrmann rolled his eyes, swallowing his fury.

“She was at the house you sent us to. The one where our brothers were murdered. She was feeding the cats—seemed very much at home. It had to be her!” The smaller man was sweating now, realization dawning on him quickly. “Are you saying this is the wrong girl?”

“Ah, welcome to reality my friend.” Fuhrmann smiled at the pair, an evil, pointy toothed smile that did nothing to calm their nerves. His voice was calm, barely audible, when he said, “This one is useless to me. Bring me the Sweet girl. You may go.”

The pair breathed a hesitant sigh of relief as they strode quickly to the door, but as they reached the center of the clearing outside, their master’s voice stopped them in midstride.

“I’ve changed my mind,” was all they heard before exploding into a million bits. Fuhrmann glanced around the clearing, wiping a bit of subordinate goo from beneath his eye.

Turning back to the interior of the cabin, he pointed to Piper’s surly guard and said, “You—clean that up.”
