Chapter Fifteen

Abbie was glad he’d talked Claude into inviting some of the other coven leaders to come meet with the wounded man. Well, meet with was misleading—the guy wasn’t likely to wake up. If someone didn’t do something to help him soon—within a day or two, max—he’d be dead.

Claude glanced down at him. “He looks very young.”

“Yeah he does.” Abbie noted the stubble-less jaw and the lack of wrinkles on the man’s face. “I hope he’s legal. Hard to tell without a license or some other identification.”

“If he had one, it’d have been taken,” Claude remarked. “No sense in making this easy on us.” He brushed a hand through Abbie’s hair. “I need to leave for a little while. I wanted—” He huffed softly and licked his lips. “It doesn’t matter what I wanted. I have responsibilities, and I must try to find Zebulon and whoever is working with him. It can’t be a coincidence that two vampires have learned how to break their mate bonds. Somewhere, Zebulon must have met up with another as dark of soul as he is.”

“I wish you’d stay here,” Abbie said, but shook his head when Claude started to speak. “No, I know. You have to go. I get that. I wish I could go with you, but I’d be in the way. I do understand all of that. Doesn’t mean I can’t wish things were different.”

Claude’s smile almost melted Abbie on the spot. “And I would love to stay, and strip you naked. The things we could do to each other…”

Abbie groaned. He was on the verge of begging or demanding that Claude wait just half an hour even, when the injured man whimpered, his entire body shuddering. His eyelids popped open and he screamed.

Or tried to. He hadn’t much of a voice left.

“Take care of him,” Claude said with more concern than disinterest. “He didn’t deserve this, I don’t think.”

“Doubt it,” Abbie murmured. “Be safe, Claude.”

Claude came right up to him then kissed him, a sweet mix of want and affection that made Abbie’s heart swell. Claude stepped back. “Do not let anyone in other than the vampires we have discussed. I will return before dawn. As soon as I can.”

Abbie swallowed around a plea for Claude to stay. He had his duties. Abbie, in turn, had his as well.
