Start just off center with high, large, or dramatic elements. Surround with midsize succulents.

It’s surprising how many plants you can stuff into a 12-inch-diameter basket. As they grow over the edge, the arrangement will become looser and airier. You could also use cuttings instead of rooted plants; fewer plants (they’ll fill in over time); or one kind of cascading succulent only.

Trailing succulents

Most stem succulents will become pendant over time as they seek soil in which to root. These specifically vining types prefer bright light rather than shade:

Ice plants

Othonna capensis

Sedums (stonecrops)

Senecio kleiniiformis (spear head)

Senecio radicans ‘Fish Hooks’ (‘Fish Hooks’ senecio)
