Wow! Harold must have some kind of magic powers. He can turn the evil Suzie into a charming sister.
âOh, you are such a cute, little, fluffy wuffy,â Suzie cooed into the cage. âI could just eat you up! Look at you!â
âYou are such a weirdo.â
âNo Iâm not!â
âYes you are!â I said, making the cuckoo sign. Robbie and I burst out laughing.
âAm not!â
âAre too!â
Just then my dad stuck his head in the bathroom. âHey, whatâs the noise about? You are all supposed to be getting ready for bed. Freddy, can you hand me Haroldâs cage?â
âWhy, Dad?â
âBecause I am taking Harold down to the kitchen. Your mom and I have decided that Harold will sleep in the kitchen.â
âThe kitchen?â
âYep, the kitchen. Do you remember I told you that hamsters are nocturnal? Harold is going to be partying all night long. Heâll be making lots of noise, and your mother and I donât want him to keep you up all night, so heâs going to spend the night in the kitchen.â
âPlease, Dad,â I pleaded. âPlease let Harold stay with me and Robbie. We promise weâll go right to sleep. He wonât keep us up.â
âI donât think â¦â
âJust for tonight, Dad,â I interrupted. âLetâs see. If he keeps us up, then weâll take him downstairs. I promise.â
âWell ⦠â
I hugged my dad around the waist and looked at him with my âsad puppyâ eyes. âPretty please with a cherry on top?â
âOh, all right.â
Yes! The sad puppy eyes work every time!
âThanks, Dad. Youâre the best!â
After we finished brushing our teeth, I filled up Haroldâs water bottle and we went to my room. I put Haroldâs cage right in between our two sleeping bags. âYouâll be safe tonight, little guy. Robbie and I will protect you. And if you have any nightmares, we always have the Dream Police.â
Harold looked up at me and wiggled his nose. Then he jumped on his hamster wheel and started running. My mom and dad walked in to say good night. âLooks like the partyâs already started,â said my dad.
âAre you boys sure you donât want us to put him in the kitchen? That wheel is awfully squeaky,â said my mom.
âWeâre sure.â
âWell, just let us know if you change your minds, OK?â
âGood night,â said my mom. âDonât let the bedbugs bite.â She gave us each a kiss.
âGood night,â said my dad. âGet some sleep.â
They turned off the light and shut the door.
As soon as we heard their footsteps disappear down the hall, Robbie and I turned on our flashlights. We wanted to watch Harold in action. Since he had slept most of the day, I wanted to see what he did when he was awake.
âWow! He sure runs fast for such a little guy,â I said.
