Cutting to the Chase: Postproduction

Universal City, California—1971

After a mentally and physically strenuous three weeks on location, the pace did not slow for Steven Spielberg, nor would it for another few weeks. The Duel production was staring down the barrel of an immovable air date on November 13, 1971, with what was ostensibly a feature-length film to cut, score, mix, and finalize within a matter of weeks. To ensure the film was ready for its broadcast premiere, Spielberg, Eckstein, and their postproduction crew worked day and night for another three straight weeks, working with what Spielberg said to be about 95,000 feet of dailies.

One of the first hires Eckstein made for the postproduction team was Frank Morriss, the Universal editor who originally tried to interest numerous producers on the lot in Matheson’s story when it was published earlier that April. Richard Belding, the head of the editing division at the studio, called Morriss into his office for a meeting at Eckstein’s request.

“You know that story you were trying to peddle around here, ‘Duel’?” Belding asked Morris. “George Eckstein wants you to cut it for him.”
