17. Sock-rilege
“I GOT YOUR LETTER,” PHILLIP SAID TO FARA and Jody on their way to the cafeteria the next week. They had thought it would be funny to write him a sock response letter and had mailed it with the rest. “And I would be honored to attend the First Sockinental Congress on Thursday night,” he said in a formal voice.
“Splendid,” replied Fara in the same tone.
“Wait,” said Jody. “Thursday night?”
“Yeah…at least, I think that’s what the letter said,” Phillip said. “I’ve been practicing that response all day.”
“I thought we were doing it on Friday,” Jody said to Fara.
Fara shook her head. “I forgot to tell you. The party room at Lane’s Lanes isn’t free on Friday, so my dad suggested Thursday at seven o’clock instead. I changed all the letters. I didn’t think it would make a difference.”
“Fara!” cried Jody. “Boris!”
“Boris?” said Phillip.
Fara’s face fell. She remembered the instant Jody said it. Of course Jody couldn’t come on Thursday night. “I’m so sorry, Jode. I should have checked with you before I mailed the letters.”
“Checked?” Jody said.
“No, I should have known. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
“I can’t believe you forgot. I only complain to you about Boris every single week.”
“What’s a boris?” asked Phillip.
“A big, hairy cello teacher,” muttered Jody. “Who is very expensive and travels a long way to teach me.” She threw her backpack down and dropped into a chair at their usual table.
Fara felt terrible. Her mistake was huge. Sock-rilegious. “I can write everybody and change it,” she suggested.
“Forget it,” said Jody. “It’s too late.”
Fara wanted to insist that it wasn’t, but she knew that it was. “I’m so, so, so sorry. I’ll call you right after the meeting and tell you everything. I promise. It’ll be just like you were there.”
Jody sighed. “This socks,” she said.
