Kania traps, when brand new, are very bright and shiny and these need spray painting a combination of green and brown to help them blend in with the woodland environment. If you are fitting them to a back board then these also need spray painting to match. If you were using them solely as a trap for use in a roof space, then obviously there is no need to disguise them in any way and you can dispense with the paint option. Where you can, use matt finish cans of spray paint as gloss finish tends to reflect too much in bright sunlight. The less noticeable the trap is from the public, so much the better. Another place Kanias are effective for squirrel control is where they run along girders or beams in a barn or warehouse situation. I once had to trap some squirrels in the greenkeepers large storage shed on a golf course; they were raiding the grass seed bags and also setting off the burglar alarms with their high level antics. I fixed a Kania and cubby with a large cable tie to the steel girder they were using as an access point. I caught 5 squirrels in a week with the Kania baited with peanuts, the entry hole was sealed off and there was no further squirrel trouble to that particular shed. In a roof space, a Kania fitted to a board sits nicely across a couple of ceiling joists, and if this is positioned near to the roof entry point, will pretty soon account for the offending squirrel. By fitting the trap to the board, it makes it easy to lay a trail of peanuts from the front edge of the cubby right up to the bait chamber at the back, no self respecting squirrel can resist following such an inviting food source. On a serious note, do warn the householder that they may hear a loud bang as the trap goes off; you don’t want to find the client was just about to take a sip of coffee when the trap fired and he scalded himself in the process. As previously stated, they are very powerful traps and they go off with one hell of a bang, fortunately they are also very humane as they dispatch any trapped animal instantly.
