Program Division in 2001 largely to expand its viewer base by developing programming that might “attract ‘casual fans,’ or those who enjoy sports but are not voracious devotees.”40 The Original Programming Division was restructured in 2005 and re-emerged in 2008 as “ESPN Films.” ESPN thus explicitly aligns the network’s production arm with cinematic values, “calling attention to their use of the film medium; the involvement of well-known filmmakers in their production, and their inclusion in film festivals prior to their appearance on TV.”41 “ESPN Films” signals ESPN’s investment in branding itself—particularly through its prestige documentary series—as “the public historian of record for twentieth-century sports.”42 The following specifically examines Nine for IX’s role in ESPN’s claims to capital through the series’ appeals to its status and relevance as an educator. These claims must be understood as industrial discourses that are also textual and social, reflecting presumptions about whose stories count and which audiences are worth cultivating in a multiplatform era in which sport content drives much of the media economy.
