Comprehension

Some reading experts argue that reading is a matter of developing a reflex. Initially, as you attempt to improve your reading speed, you might find that you have trouble understanding and retaining information. You might even feel like you are not comprehending anything that you are reading. This is quite common and understandable.

Look back at your life. You have learned a lot of new things over the course of your life. Consider learning to ride a bicycle or learning to swim. As you were initially learning to ride, you were more concerned about keeping your balance and not falling off. At that time, you did not really enjoy cycling. You could not feel the wind in your hair and the freedom of movement. Though, once you mastered your balance, you began to enjoy the activity.

Reading or speed reading is no different. Like cycling, once your reflex is developed, you will start to enjoy it.

Initially as you strive to improve your speed, do not worry about comprehension and retention very much. Instead, focus on just getting through the text. Like you used to focus on just keeping your balance.

Keep a timer by your side and try to beat your previous time every time you sit down to practice. At the start, you might not remember a lot of what you read but with time you will be able to retain all the information even when speed reading.

It might sound hard to believe but trust me on this one. Comprehension will come with time, patience and practice.

In the beginning, I do not recommend speed reading when you have to prepare for an exam or have to read something that your boss gave you. Initially, limit speed reading to your practice exercises. However, once your comprehension and retention improves, you can easily speed read through all of your life's tasks.
