Chapter Six

Yes, Lyle is ready to take the pressure off of Trish. Poor girl came here to meet some like-minded friends and try out her music, and she’s being picked apart. He doesn’t know how to show her how amazed he is by her. That voice. So smooth and easy. Reminds him of old school Country. Like Olivia Newton John or Crystal Gayle. The stuff his mom used to love when he was a kid. The world could use a little of that now. He’s tired of belting and yodeling.

The lyrics, though. He doesn’t know why it bothers him that she’s singing this song not much more than two minutes after meeting Aiden. It’s a coincidence, surely, but still... He can’t help wondering, did she pick that one out to sing on purpose? Lyle knows full well that Aiden is handsome. Girls have always favored him. The music label has a publicity team helping him achieve an image. It works. He doesn’t look like the guy who used to sleep on the very sofa in this room half a year ago when he couldn’t afford his rent and got kicked out of his apartment. That side of Aiden isn’t showing. Now he’s slick and thinks he knows everything.

Then there’s Neil. Trish chose working with him over Aiden. Unexpected. What was that about? He wants to believe it’s about music, but she seems especially won over by his best friend. Lyle needs to step up his game to steal her attention back from Aiden’s presence and Neil’s talent.

Lyle opens his folder and sifts through the pages of sheet music until he finds the one he wants. He pulls it out and shows it to Neil without saying anything.

“Oh, you want to do that one instead of what we...? Yeah. Sure. Sounds good. I haven’t figured out that one part yet, but I’ll fudge it.”

Lyle grins. “You’ll do something brilliant, I’m sure. You always do.”

Neill flips open a three-ring notebook he had on the floor beside him and finds his copy of the song while Lyle puts his back in the folder so Trish can’t look at it. He feels uncomfortable with her looking over his shoulder at it. He’d prefer to stand up, but those two back-up singers are behind him on the barstools. It’d be rude to be standing right in front of them. If he backs into the open space, then Trish will have to turn around awkwardly in her chair to see him. Fine, he’ll stay in his seat.

“This one’s pretty new for Neil and me, too. It was what I was working on at the coffee house where Trish and I met the other day. So, we haven’t practiced it a whole lot yet.”

“Quit stalling and sing,” Roy huffs.

“Stop apologizing in advance. We’ll let you know if it stinks.” Aiden laughs and slaps his knee like it’s a joke.

No one else laughs. Not even the bar stool girls.

Pearl rubs her hands together excitedly. “Go on, honey. You’ve never sung a song that didn’t make me wish I was thirty years younger and available.
