2Although the entries in the data matrix Q are transitions, this matrix is not the frequency transition matrix. The frequency transition matrix is a K x K matrix (where K is the number of different behaviors in the coding system) and the entries are the number of transitions from one behavior to another. The data matrix Q is an N x N matrix and the entries are 1s or 0s, depending on whether or not a transition occurred. See Wampold and Margolin (1982) for the details of the data matrix.

3Comparison to a normal distribution for the statistics discussed here appears to be justified, but raises some issues that are discussed toward the end of this chapter.
