Chapter Sixteen

Back in the boardroom, the only thing keeping Evan calm is his postcoital bliss. The board members have split the vote, with only one vote remaining. The man is droning on about the positives and negatives of Evan’s proposal and he seems to be leaning more towards a yes vote.

The Chairman didn’t give the opportunity for rebuttals, so Evan has to sit there quietly and listen to the board’s inane arguments. It’s been over an hour and he’s had to stop himself from rolling his eyes on numerous occasions as they switch their consensus time and time again. He also wonders if some of them had even read his report as they seem to use inaccurate information over and over again in their discussions.

Finally, the man speaking wraps it up and Evan subconsciously leans forward to hear the answer. “While I think it’s a worthy proposal, I just cannot, in good conscience, vote in favor of Mr. Preston’s proposal. My vote is nay.”

The room clears shortly after, leaving Evan to stare blankly at the wall. He had really believed that the last member would vote in favor of his proposal. Though it was his relationship with Kameron that spurred him to put so much time into the matter, there were other employees that wanted this change. He knew of a few couples in his own department that had to hide their relationship, only because he was observant.

Shaking himself out of his stupor, he heads back to his office to begin working on his resume. He no longer felt this was the right company, especially given the majority of conservative old men that reminded him of his own father and his archaic views. He would have never accepted his position if he had known what he would be up against. They had hired him to make changes to attract the best workers, yet they would not allow him to implement the changes necessary to do his job properly.

“But then I wouldn’t have met my girl,” he mumbles to himself as he works through his disappointment.

A knock on the door startles him. “Mr. Preston,” Kami says, her eyes glowing in happiness, “you’re needed in the project room. Gilbert is about to throttle Louise for tidying his area.”

“Seriously?” Evan sighs. “Why would Louise touch his mess?”

“I’m guessing you aren’t really looking for an answer to that,” she teases as he moves over to where she is leaning against his door frame, the lips that he had tasted just hours earlier set up in a smirk.

When he reaches her, he refrains from kissing those perfect lips. Instead, he lets his hand lightly brush against hers, making Kami close her eyes for a moment. “I’ve told Louise multiple times that even though it looks like chaos, he has his own filing system. It bothered me at first, but since he always seems to know exactly where everything is, I ignore it.”
