Consider yourself dead to your past.

Paul wrote that he wanted to know Christ and the power of His resurrection, so that he too might experience this resurrected life (Phil. 3:9). The key to this, he challenged, is to forget the past.

But this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

—PHILIPPIANS 3:13–14

This prize that Paul spoke of was the call of God and the incredible future that God had planned. In order to have this, however, he had to train his mind to disregard the past and consider himself dead to it. He did so by holding fast to everything he attained because of the finished work at Christ’s cross (v. 16).

Remember that Jesus was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, and by His bruises we are healed (Isa. 53:5). The cross paid for all the regrets and pain of the past, whether a result of your own sin or someone else’s. Part of the resurrected life is that the Lord transforms the dirty things that once haunted you with shame and regret into something beautiful (Isa. 61:1–3).

Your former life is nailed to the cross and you’re declared an “oak of righteousness,” which displays God’s grandiosity (v. 3). When Satan whispers to remind you of these things in an attempt to make you feel worthless or guilty, consider that you’re healed, made beautiful, and adorned with the glory of God. Cast down those nagging thoughts and say, “I’m dead to you.”
