Butt the wired edge against a firm support and use a wedge-shaped striker (Fig. 7-23) to make the final closure (Fig. 7-24). The striker may be a hard plastic or hardwood block with a tapered nosepiece (Fig. 7-25), with a tiny flat at the end.

The purpose of the striker is to close the curl, but not to lever the wired edge off the sheet. Make the striking face of the striker as broad as possible, to spread the impact and avoid marking the surface of the curl.

The initial curl can be produced with a jenny by using a pair of beading dies, tilting the sheet upwards as it is rolled, to produce the J-shaped edge to the sheet (Fig. 7-26) – but note that a larger upstand will result in a bead between two flat areas, while a smaller upstand will be difficult to produce without distortion. Scribe a line 8mm from the edge of the sheet, then position the scribed line directly under the top roller.
