Shaving Scuttle or Mug

The decorative edge can be augmented by getting hold of a great shaving scuttle or mug. These can be as plain and functional or as quirky or ostentatious as you desire.

The general principle surrounding a scuttle or mug is to thoroughly douse and fill it with hot water. The heat will remain in the ceramic and will in turn transfer to the lather, which makes for increased pleasure as you apply the warm suds to your face. Scuttles are essentially mugs with an extra compartment to hold hot water throughout the shave, passively warming the creamy lather.

Note that any bowl, cup or mug containing shave foam can be simply rested upon the base of a plugged sink already filled with hot water. So long as your sink is the correct shape, the heat will transfer to the lather. The desired heat can of course be varied or perpetuated should you want to re-lather during a shave.

There is a growing secondhand market for shaving mugs, with many readily obtainable in yard sales or even antique stores. The outright quirky or retro appearances some quality mugs and scuttles possess can make them a pretty interesting novelty decoration. Many appear generically domestic such as flowered designs similar to that of plate sets, whilst others are dedicated to vintage events or legacy brands. Keep an eye out!
