FINISHED DIMENSIONS

Varies (see the charts here and here for specific dimensions)

I ADMIT THAT I’M NOT usually an apron person. I’m always sporting a wet spot on my stomach after handwashing dishes, and food splatters during cooking have rarely bothered me. But maybe I’m finally becoming more civilized because I’ve made a few of these classic Japanese-style aprons, and I adore them. They make me feel efficient and productive, even if all I’m doing is sitting around in my house, trying to motivate myself to start cleaning. To instill some housekeeping mojo in my child, I also created an adjustable kid-size version. Of course, you could follow the steps for the kid-version to make the grown-up version adjustable too.

This is a simple apron with crossover straps in the back made entirely out of rectangles. No closures, no ties, just slip it over your head, easy-peasy. Plus, with some French seam and binding techniques, the underside looks just as clean and streamlined as the front.

As you can see, the pocket sizes vary in the images, but it really doesn’t matter—choose a size that looks good to you. That’s one of the best parts about sewing, right? You get to make exactly what you want. Photos shown here and here.
