Adhesive method: With just some heavy-duty fusible web, you can iron on any felt appliqué as easily as an iron-on patch.

Floating method: A simple straight stitch down the middle of a felt shape is enough to hold it in place and leaves the rest free for added dimension.

Straight stitch method: Choose a contrasting color thread for a cute shabby-chic look.

Zigzag method:

Fusible web: Light

Stitch: Zigzag

Fabric: Felt or cotton

This method takes longer than those listed on page 40, but allows you to use cotton as your appliqué fabric without fear of it unraveling. Adhere your appliqué fabric to the main fabric with fusible web. Using a zigzag stitch of short length (0.75–1.25) and medium to wide width (2–4.5), sew along the edges of the appliqué fabric, covering the raw edge of the fabric.

Satin stitch method:

Fusible web: Medium-weight

Stitch: Zigzag

Fabric: Felt or cotton

After applying the appliqué pieces, sew a medium to wide width and very short length (usually the shortest your machine can handle) zigzag stitch over the edge of the pieces. This takes more patience and coordination, but yields a very professional result. Medium-weight stabilizer is recommended, because the dense stitches can warp the main fabric.

This option completely encases the raw edges of the appliqué piece in thread, so there is no need to worry about unraveling. Complementary thread colors can also be used, and embroidery threads work especially well in this application, as the finished product has a beautiful sheen.
