Five Surprises in Hell
“And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire. Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might. The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” (Isa. 33:12-14)
This is one of those strange passages in the Bible. In that passage, there are people burning like thorns cut up into lime. Then Isaiah puts this question to his readers: “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire...with everlasting burnings?”
The Bible says, “For our God is a consuming fire” (Heb. 12:29). That verse isn’t preached on today by one preacher out of fifty. They preach “God is love” (1 John 4:8) and “God loves you so much” and “He cares for you so much.”
The people in America are “love sick” or something. They have just got to have love made to them all the time; they have to have someone say they love them all the time. What’s wrong a nation of sissies like that anyway? They must not be close enough to God to get anything out of the relationship, I don’t guess.
All these Christian big shots preach love, love, love all the time—I get to the point like it says in Song of Solomon 5:8 where “I am sick of love” at times. Once in a while every sinner needs a good bawling out and a good straightening up. It ain’t all love.
Now, “God is love”—I believe that. I believe “God so loved the world” (John 3:16). I believe “perfect love casteth out fear” (1 John 4:18). I believe all that, but that has nothing to do with what we are talking about here.
Here, we are talking about God landing you in Hell. If you are saved, “perfect love casteth out fear.” If you are saved, you shouldn’t be afraid of going to Hell, but even that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t fear God.
Do you know what Paul said to Christians? “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil. 2:12). Why? To stay out of Hell? No, because “God...worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). God works in you His good will, and if you don’t go His way, then you hurt for it.
Now, as far as God’s nature is concerned, He “is a consuming fire,” so the question is: “Who is going to ‘dwell with everlasting burnings?’” Well, I know who did if you don’t: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They came out of the fire, and you couldn’t even smell the smoke on them. They were bound hand and foot when they were cast into that furnace. When they came out, they were walking around, so the “bonds” had to have been burned off (Dan. 3:25). They had ropes tied around their hands and feet,
