Chapter 5 - Self-confidence: Causes for Low Self-confidence
The next step, or truth be told, another aspect of self-esteem is self-confidence. In fact, at first glance it might look like both are the same thing but they are not. Both have slightly different definitions and meanings. Basically self-esteem refers to the value you think you have in the eyes of the world. Self-confidence, on the other hand relates to the belief that you will be successful at what you are doing. People get to feel the effects of low self-confidence when they are nervous. For example, when you go for an interview, you may feel that you really cannot get through the interview and may panic about it. This isn’t about self-esteem. It’s about self-confidence or belief in your ability to get through that interview.
So now you may wonder which one is more important and which one you should start working on. The fact is that the jury is still out. The discourse on this is a never-ending one, although the majority of researchers, psychologists and scholars believe that you first need to work on your self-esteem. They believe that self-confidence is an offshoot of self-esteem. According to them, self-esteem is the root of everything including your self-confidence levels. So if you work on your self-esteem, you can be sure that your self-confidence also grows as your self-esteem rises. Imagine that your friend has achieved so many things and is extremely skilled and intelligent but he doesn’t like his own self-image. It does not make sense to many but it does to him. Saying that self-confidence is more important than self-esteem is also like that. Once you have a high self-esteem, your confidence shoots up on its own. Most of us fall prey to the idea of self-confidence being the most important issue and the whole world looks at us like we have everything going perfectly for us but in reality, we do not. Unless you are happy with yourself, you cannot take genuine pride in what you have achieved. Ask a rich man. He may have attained wealth, but ask him if he likes himself. If he does not, then it’s likely that his confidence levels are also not what they could be.
Causes:
Self-confidence, in a similar way to self-esteem, starts in childhood. Parents need to make sure that their child is having a stress free and happy life. Self-confidence needs to be instilled in the child from a very young age. The child should know that he/ she is capable of doing things on his/ her own. As stated earlier, if you are a parent, do not discourage your child. These years hold so much power and will affect how your child’s whole adulthood will turn out. Your child needs to know that even if he/ she fails, you will always be there to help him and that failure is not the end. Teach him/ her to get up when he falls down. Do not keep cooing over him/ her.
