But she was also the songbirds’ saint in a more literal sense. At one point in the Long Text of Revelations, Julian hears an abrasive noise that sounds like a blacksmith’s bellows. Jesus, in her vision, then fine-tunes the sound so she can hear it more clearly. First, it sounds like the cooing of a dove, then like the song of a robin redbreast. Thereafter and throughout her life, whenever she heard the sounds of birds, no matter how oppressed she felt by the weight of pain and suffering in the world, she would reflect on what Jesus told her about the meaning of the songs of birds: “By these tokens may you know well that I love you.”30
