Chapter 80
Feed Your Vision and Starve Your Fear
Your mental energy is a finite source of power of which you have complete control. Where you choose to direct it, and how intensely you focus it will determine 90% of your success. The masses squander their mental energy on trivial matters such as entertainment, sports, parties, alcohol, drugs, etc. The focus of their psychological power is divided among so many things that it’s barely enough to live a mediocre existence. And by the end of the day, fatigue sets in and there’s only enough energy to finish mundane tasks and sleep. This is a formula for losing. Instead, decide on the one major goal that will help you most during the day, and then focus the majority of your mental energy towards it. Champions refuse to waste their precious mental energy on fear-based thinking or worry. The great ones are famous for being laser-focused on their ultimate vision and the day-to-day steps necessary to make it a reality. There’s an old saying that supports this strategy: “Feed your vision and starve your fear.” The more you focus your thinking on something, the more it grows and the stronger it gets. Winners develop a healthy obsession with their goals and dreams, and this is one of the secrets of their success. Does this mean you should avoid thinking about fun, entertainment, and relaxing activities outside of your vision? No. As a matter of fact, you should devote a small part of each day to mindless relaxation and fun. This will help you lead a more balanced life and prevent you from burning out. I call this the 90/10 Formula. 90 percent of your waking hours should be invested in the active pursuit of your dreams, and the remaining 10% should be spent on hobbies, sports, or any other form of healthy entertainment. If you’re awake 16 hours per day, then you have 1.6 hours every day to goof off. The remaining the 14.4 hours of laser focus will make you a champion.
