At 4:50 p.m. (the time is indelibly recorded in 4th Armored Division dispatches) Boggess saw some engineers in friendly uniform preparing to assault a pillbox near the highway. These were men of the 326th Airborne Engineer Battalion. Gen. George Patton had finally broken through the Nazi lines.

Unbeknownst to the occupants of the Heintz Barracks, contact between the Bastogne garrison and Patton’s Third Army had been established. Patton’s Third Army had finally reached the perimeter of Bastogne and breached the German lines that had managed to hold the city under siege for over a week. The 4th Armored Division had bravely run the gauntlet and beaten a narrow but precarious corridor. Despite ensuing strenuous German efforts to close it, the corridor remained open.
