Whatever the LORD pleases, He does,
in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps. (Psalm 135:6)
The counsel of the LORD stands forever,
the plans of His heart from generation to generation. (Psalm 33:11)
For example, a church, a council, a person.
Before the canon was closed.
After the council made its declaration.
The Apocrypha is addressed later in this chapter.
The apocryphal books are also known as the deuterocanonicals.
When the canon was ecumenically addressed.
1 Timothy 3:15.
Such as the works of Bruce Metzger (The Canon of the New Testament: Its Origin, Development, and Significance [Oxford, 1987]) and F. F. Bruce (The Canon of Scripture [InterVarsity Press, 1988]).
Roger Beckwith, The Old Testament Canon of the New Testament Church (Eerdmans, 1986), 85.
Recall that canon1 is the divine knowledge and understanding of the canon.
Recall that canon2 is the human knowledge and understanding of the canon.
See also 1 Timothy 1:10; 4:13, 16; 5:17; 6:3; 2 Timothy 4:3; Titus 2:1, 7.
Without identifying which aspect is being discussed—canon1 or canon2.
See the argument of Roger Nicole, “The Canon of the New Testament” in Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, 40:2 (June 1997): 204.
Obviously, many disagree with this statement, pointing to isolated statements all over the historical record as evidence. But it is precisely the scattered nature of these statements, and the fact that they never reflect a consensus of believers over any period of time or great distance, that substantiates my claim. It is good that there were those who questioned canonical works, especially when they first appeared in a particular area; de facto, open arms and untested acceptance of any “scripture” indicates a lack of discernment. The reception of some works in the particular area of their original authorship is likewise understandable, even if such works never gained currency outside of the geographical area of their origination.
The only exception being Greek additions to canonical books found in the apocrypha.
Augustine, Sermon 162c, The Works of Saint Augustine: A Translation for the 21st Century, trans., Edmund Hill, ed., John Rotelle (New City Press, 1997), III.11.176.
See chapter 10.

2 Maccabees 12:39–45.
For definition/explanation regarding “mortal” and “venial” sin, see my book The Roman Catholic Controversy (Bethany House, 1996), 126.
1 Maccabees 4:46; 9:27; 14:41.
2 Maccabees 15:38–39.
See Romans 3:2.
Jerome produced the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Scriptures.
See the discussion in William Webster, The Old Testament Canon and the Apocrypha (Christian Resources, 2002), 53–83.
Commentary on All the Authentic Historical Books of the Old Testament, cited in William Whitaker, A Disputation on Holy Scripture (Cambridge University Press, 1849), 48.
An allegation meaning that he wasn’t speaking for the entire Roman Catholic Church.
