The class emptied out, leaving just Ian, Mrs. Tanner, and me. Mrs. Tanner motioned for us to come to the front as she remained at her desk. Just after Ian had handed in his paperâand was asked to stay behind as wellâheâd pressed the word âwhyâ into my back. Iâd been smart enough not to answer, but I certainly had my suspicions.
We stood in front of her desk. I noticed that she was holding my test in her hand.
âI guess youâre both wondering why I asked you two to stay behind,â she said.
âKinda curious,â Ian said calmly.
For somebody with filtration issues he certainly could be cool in the face of danger. I guess in some ways heâd managed to get himself in so much trouble over the years that heâd become used to dealing with it. Practice makes perfect.
With her finger, Mrs. Tanner started to tap out her answer. She had what Morse Code operators called a âclumsy handle,â but it was pretty clear what she was spelling out: M-O-R-S-E.
Ian looked as though heâd been punched in the gut, which was how I felt as well.
âSo you two were communicating in Morse Code, is that correct?â she asked.
âYeah, we do that all the time. Itâs just us talking,â I lied. âWe do it so nobody knows what weâre talking about.â
âI knew,â she said.
âHow did you know?â I asked.
âGirl Scouts. It was a long time ago but I remember things,â she said.
âMy therapist encourages me to do it so I donât say so many stupid things out loud and get in trouble,â Ian explained. âYou can talk to her if you want and sheâll tell you.â
âIt wasnât you tapping out the message. It was Sam. I looked at your test,â she said, holding it up. âNowhere is there a sequence of four questions with the correct answers being A, B, B, A. What exactly were you trying to communicate to Ian?â
Ian laughed, which seemed to surprise both of us. âYou caught us,â he said. âThis is sort of embarrassing. Do you want to tell her, Sam, or should I?â
âWhy donât you,â I suggested, since I had no idea what he was going to say.
âSure. You know all about the promposals that are going around, right?â Ian asked Mrs. Tanner.
âI donât know all about them, but I certainly know of them. Itâs hard not to notice. Go on.â
âSam is going to be making oneââ
âYou are?â Mrs. Tanner sounded surprised.
âYeah, Ian and Brooke are helping me arrange it.â
âStrange, but continue,â she said. âExplain how this relates to what weâre talking about.â
âWell, most of them come with musical accompaniment, and before class I asked Sam to tell me which group he thinks should be featured, and he told me he was thinking it over. We were having this discussion about whether it should be something current or something retro. During the test he told me which group he wanted. Itâs ABBA.â
âABBA, as in the Swedish group from the â70s?â Mrs. Tanner asked.
âWhose music, while
