As a result, Mother Teresa founded the City of Peace at Titlagargh. The quarter, which previously had been overrun with crime, was slowly transformed into something beautiful (Chawla, 138). Missionaries of Charity brothers, who were now the men’s branch of the order founded in 1954, together with able-bodied leprosy patients themselves, helped to construct this ‘city’ for the leprosy community, which was completed in 1968 after a decade of work. There, they received the treatments that modern medicine could provide. Those no longer infectious were employed to produce the blue and white saris for the Missionaries of Charity as well as their bed sheets. They were treated with dignity and were able to put their abilities to use while receiving treatment. Mother Teresa opened up many more centers for those suffering with leprosy in India and abroad in the coming years.
