It’s worth a moment to draw out the similarities and differences between running and walking. If you’ve ever walked as fast as you could without breaking into a run, you’ve approached the crossover point: the “jump” that runners make from foot to foot. No matter how fast they go, even professional speed walkers always keep one foot on the ground at all times, whereas runners get a little air with every stride.

You have your plan, you’ve laced your shoes, and you hit the road. Despite your expectations, you’re able to run farther than you imagined, and you’re having a hard time stopping yourself. While it may seem odd to talk about overtraining this early in your running career, it’s a risk for runners at every level. Remember, the key to running success is gradual adaptation. Ramping up your time spent running slowly is the key, or you may waste time with an injury caused by over-zealous training. This is particularly a problem for new runners. Stick to your plan—it’s the safest way to get where you want to go.
