The rest of the day wasn’t a fraction as exciting as the beginning. Grace waited for Alaric and waited and waited. She was happy the doctor had ordered so many tests so they’d know exactly what was wrong with him, but she was annoyed that they wouldn’t let her stay with him during the tests. She tried to pull the card of being his primary care physician, but the nurse had kindly explained that Alaric was temporarily under Dr. Schuman’s care, and it would be easier if she waited in the waiting room or went out to see the sights. Her heart kind of leapt thinking of Alaric not being her patient any longer. What did that mean for them? But mostly she wanted to be by his side.

Her stomach grumbled as the hours wore on, but she didn’t dare leave the waiting room in case he got finished with the tests. Their appointment with Dr. Schuman was at three o’clock. She wished time away and looked through another American magazine. Why hadn’t she thought to bring a novel? Why didn’t they have novels on hand? She glanced around the partially-filled waiting room. Everyone else was on their electronic device, even the small children. Her cell phone was as outdated as the rest of Magna and only made calls and texts.

Jason had called on a break and they’d chatted for about ten minutes until he had to get back to class. Alaric’s mom, Queen Raya, had called as well. Grace felt bad that she had no news for her, but it was comforting to hear her voice. It made her miss home, which was weird. She’d lived in America for four years and thought she was past being homesick. The two calls were the only break she got from the boredom.

She stood and paced. Finally, Alaric appeared at the doorway and her heart leapt. He looked so good—strong and tall and appealing. Could this man truly have something wrong with his brain? It was hard to imagine, and she kept praying for an easy fix.

She hurried to him. “How’s it going?”

“Fine, I think. They like me undressed more than you do.” He winked and her cheeks and abdomen heated up. “They said they’re done with me until the appointment with the doc this afternoon. Shall we go find lunch somewhere?”

“Yes. I’m starving.” She checked her watch. It was one-thirty. “Maybe somewhere close by?”

“Let’s walk outside and see what there is. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time inside buildings with fake, cold air.”

She laughed. “I’m with you. Americans seem to like the bought air.”

They found the stairs and walked down corridors until they found an exit. The air was hot but dry, nothing like the heat and humidity at home, but Magna usually had a cooling breeze from the ocean. Only on day two and already she missed home. The four years of medical school had been well worth it, and she’d enjoyed her experiences, but she’d vowed to never live away from Magna again.
